Well I might say it every month but time really has flown. So much so that I even forgot to write a March blog and now we are into the depths of Spring and we’re blogless! Dark times!
In March we were delighted to play once more at the Scottish Variety Awards. It was great to be back two years after our last performance there and it’s really a fantastic event which raises a lot of money every year for the DEBRA charity while celebrating the best in Scotland’s upcoming talent. GUN were also playing on the night and it was great to hear them again after a great set at Belladrum last summer. We only had to play two numbers that night which was very short and sweet but we bashed out Livin’ La Vida Loca and Take On Me and then went and did some celebrating ourselves.
April was possibly incomparable to anything we’ve ever done as a band before as we flew out to New York City for the prestigious New York Tartan Week celebrations. And what a time we had! Our performing schedule started out at The Cutting Room where our good friends The Highland Divas were presenting their annual Tartan Week concert. As always it was a great night of Scottish music with a fine variety of special guests performing on the night too. Again, our set was short and sweet with just Take On Me to give the crowd a taste for what was to come that week.
Following on from that we played an acoustic set at Beer Authority for Belhaven Best on the Friday afternoon. It was a real change for us to play a stripped back set of that kind and we were all unsure how it would actually sound particular because we have not managed to schedule anytime in for a rehearsal but of course it went well. It was odd but great to hear tracks like Face Palm and Teenage Kicks really stripped back and chilled out but band and audience alike seemed to enjoy the experience. That same evening we were also to play a couple of pieces at the Caledonian Club Pre-Parade Ceilidh at the Abigail Adams Auditorium. Once again, it was a short set where we only had time for Never Gonna Give You Up and Livin’ La Vida Loca.
But really Saturday was always going to be a hugely special day for us. First there was the parade down 6th Avenue. We walked proudly down the street with chests puffed out and a huge Gleadhraich banner. It was glorious sunshine and we waved to the thousands and thousands of people who lined the streets to greet us and the many other Scottish groups who were participating. And from there it was time for BB King’s. It’s such a legendary, iconic place and you can really feel that in the air when you walk in the building. I have to say it was very surreal for us to be there playing. As we were preparing to walk on I could really feel the adrenaline among the band and there was a great sense that this was a truly special occasion. And so it proved to be. New York City was rocking. From the minute we kicked off with Face Palm and I’m A Believer the place was on our side singing every word back. By the time we hit our new tune, the Transformation Blues, and giving a nod to BB King himself, the place was raucous. The set really flew by like none before and before we knew it we’d played Livin’ La Vida Loca and Take On Me and we were done for the Main Room. What a great time to be alive!
We also had to play one further set in BB King’s VIP Room where we had been told that the crowd were far more subdued and that we’d be up against it. As we walked on for the first two songs that proved to be the case but by the end of the set as always we had everyone up dancing and singing to the strains of Shang-A-Lang.
We can’t thank Kyle Dawson, the President of New York Tartan Week, enough for the opportunity that he presented to us to play BB King’s and we sincerely hope that we can do it again sometime!!
And then we were home to round up the month at Wave 102’s Easter Roadshow in Camperdown Park on Easter Sunday. Unfortunately the weather meant that the crowds were down but we have never let that spoil our party and once again we had a great time rattling through the tunes. Thanks to them for having us as well!
On the gig front, we really are getting offers in right, left and centre and we are delighted about it. The second half of 2017 and 2018 are already looking to continue in this vain with some incredible gigs lined up. Stay tuned….
